Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares addressed the upcoming discussions among European leaders in Paris regarding the peace negotiation on Ukraine. He emphasized the importance of not rewarding Russian aggression, stating, "A war of aggression cannot be rewarded." Albares expressed his doubts about the prospects for peace in Ukraine, remarking, "Today I'm convinced Putin will keep attacking and bombing Ukraine. So I do not see peace on the horizon at the moment."
Albares made these statements before a summit of European leaders, including Britain's Prime Minister Keir Starmer, to be hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron on the topic of the Ukraine war. The summit was called following indications from U.S. officials that Europe might not have a role in future talks to resolve the conflict.
Last week, U.S. President Donald Trump surprised European NATO allies and Ukraine by announcing his conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, initiating a peace process without prior consultation. Additionally, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived in Saudi Arabia on Monday for discussions aimed at addressing Moscow's involvement in Ukraine.
