JUBA, Jan 28 (Reuters) - South Sudan authorities have lifted the temporary ban on Facebook and TikTok, which was imposed last week due to the spread of graphic images depicting alleged killings of South Sudanese nationals in Sudan.

The National Communications Authority stated in a Jan. 27 letter to telecoms and internet providers that the violent protests and retaliatory killings triggered by the images have since been removed from the social media platforms.

Addressing the situation, Napoleon Adok Gai, the director of the National Communications Authority, emphasized the importance of a balanced approach that tackles the underlying causes of online incitement while safeguarding the population's rights.

Following the capturing of the state capital Wad Madani in Sudan's El Gezira state by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, rights groups accused the Sudanese army and its allies of carrying out ethnically-targeted attacks on civilians earlier this month. The Sudanese army denounced the incidents as "individual violations" that were captured on video and widely shared on social media.
