Thousands of Slovaks gathered once again in the central square of Bratislava on Friday, marking the second significant protest in as many weeks. The demonstration aimed at denouncing what many view as Prime Minister Robert Fico's shift towards Russia. Demonstrations also took place in numerous cities and towns throughout Slovakia, demanding Fico's resignation with chants of "Resign, resign" and "Russian agent."
According to security officials at the rally, an estimated 42,000 to 45,000 people assembled in Bratislava's Freedom Square, slightly fewer than the turnout two weeks prior, when around 60,000 individuals protested, and lower than levels seen in 2018 following the murder of an investigative journalist that led to Fico's resignation.
Tensions have been escalating recently as Fico's government has clashed with progressive opponents and accused them of instigating chaos and attempting to overthrow the regime. Amid concerns over potential illegal government overthrows, new preventative measures are under consideration, with Fico dismissing calls for his resignation.
Critics fear that Fico's return for a fourth term in 2023 has compromised democratic principles and shifted foreign policy closer to Russia, distancing from EU and NATO alliances. The recent protests were triggered by Fico's undisclosed trip to Moscow in December to meet President Vladimir Putin, a move rare among EU leaders since Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
Despite criticisms, Fico defends his government's foreign policy as multifaceted, emphasizing cooperation with all parties. While voicing discontent with some EU policies, he maintains that Slovakia's direction is still aligned with EU and NATO objectives.
