A ski lift collapse at the Astún ski resort in Aragon, Spain on Saturday injured dozens of people, nine of them severely and eight seriously, according to the regional government. Around 80 individuals are still trapped on the chairlift, reported state TV channel TVE.
Witnesses described the incident as "like a cable coming off, causing chairs to bounce and people to be thrown off."
The cause of the cable failure remains unknown. The ski resort's management did not comment on whether any foreigners were among the injured.
Helicopters are rescuing trapped skiers and transporting the injured to nearby hospitals. Astún ski resort, popular among Spanish skiers, is situated in the Pyrenees mountain range near the French border.
