The NDP, led by Jagmeet Singh, is proposing a 100% tariff on Tesla vehicles amid the ongoing trade dispute with the U.S. They also plan to boost rebates for Canadian-made electric vehicles to $10,000.
Previously, the Liberal government offered up to $5,000 in rebates for electric vehicles, but the program has now exhausted its funding, impacting over 215,000 rebates issued in 2024.
In 2024, incentives for electric vehicles gained significant popularity, with payments exceeding a billion dollars and a 50% increase in vehicles receiving rebates compared to 2023.
Highlighting the importance of supporting Canadian manufacturing, Singh underlined the need for Canadians to prioritize buying vehicles made in Canada, stating, "If you’re buying, buy Canadian."
