Settlement Reached: Four Female News Presenters Resolve Age and Sex Discrimination Claims with BBC

In 2024, Annita McVeigh, Martine Croxall, Karin Giannone, and Kasia Madera participated in a tribunal hearing following their allegations of losing their positions at the BBC News Channel. The discord began in July 2022 when the BBC revealed its intention to merge its domestic and international news channels, thus initiating a selection process for chief presenters.

The presenters claimed sex and age discrimination, contending that the recruitment process was manipulated, as they had been given assurances that two men and two younger women would be chosen, and were instead offered lower positions as correspondents. The BBC countered these allegations by asserting that its application process was "rigorous and fair," with all candidates undergoing the same unbiased evaluation through application interviews and practical assessments.

A settlement was ultimately reached, averting a three-week tribunal. The BBC, while not admitting liability, succeeded in halting previous claims of unequal pay dating back to February 2020, on the grounds of a successful defense presented during the proceedings.
