Serbian Students Transform Tragedy into a National Change Movement

On February 14th, Marija Petrovic was driven by anger to participate in student protests in Belgrade after a tragic accident at a railway station roof in Novi Sad claimed 15 lives. The protesters accused the government of corruption and negligence in construction, which the government denies.

Over the past three months, the protests have grown into a significant movement in Serbia, involving tens of thousands of supporters from various professions. The organized students have taken over buildings, blocked roads, and caused a political crisis.

Petrovic, a molecular biology student at the University of Belgrade, expressed the sentiment of many when she said, "Any of us could have been under that roof." Protesters demand accountability and justice, portraying red-painted hands as a symbol of the blood they believe the government is responsible for.

The protest's success is attributed to its organization, clear demands, daily coordination, and leaderless structure. The demonstrators refuse to end their protest until they see tangible change, despite not explicitly calling for the overthrow of President Aleksandar Vucic.

The students' efficiency is enhanced by their new structures, including collaborative efforts across universities and a dedicated website listing their needs. The movement has received substantial financial support, with donations coming in from both within Serbia and internationally.

The ongoing protests have garnered attention internationally and are deemed a significant challenge to Vucic's authority, according to analysts. The students vow to continue until they see meaningful action taken in response to their demands.
