The Russian Foreign Ministry stated on Thursday that the United States needs to solidify its approach to resolving the conflict in Ukraine before Moscow can shape its own stance based on specific U.S. actions.
It was noted that U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin have not engaged in phone conversations since Trump's inauguration, as indicated by public statements from officials on both sides.
Earlier on Thursday, Russia's RIA state news agency quoted a senior lawmaker saying that arrangements for a meeting between Putin and Trump were in an "advanced stage."
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova commented separately that although Moscow has heard several statements from Washington regarding Ukraine, there is currently a lack of clarity on the specific intentions of the U.S. in terms of reaching a resolution for the conflict.
Zakharova emphasized, "For now, there have been many words and statements, but there is no clarity on the steps being taken by the U.S., so it would be premature to discuss the possibilities of negotiations or any other aspects within this context."
She added, "As for Washington, they should probably formulate their policy, and we will proceed based on their concrete steps and actions."
Both Trump and Keith Kellogg, Trump's special envoy for Ukraine and Russia, have expressed efforts to devise a plan to facilitate a resolution to the conflict in Ukraine, but have not disclosed detailed information about the plan yet.
