Royal Society of the UK to Address Fellow Behavior in Light of Musk Controversy

The Royal Society, the oldest national scientific academy established in 1660, announced that it will convene a meeting to address concerns regarding the public statements and behaviors of its fellows, following objections from numerous scientists over Elon Musk's continued membership. Musk was elected as a fellow in 2018 for his advancements in space exploration and electric vehicles, joining a prestigious list that includes Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin, Albert Einstein, and Stephen Hawking.

Over 2,000 scientists have signed an open letter, drafted by structural biologist Stephen Curry, expressing disappointment over the Royal Society's perceived lack of action concerning Musk's fellowship. They allege that Musk's alleged involvement in conspiracy theories violates the society's code of conduct, emphasizing the seriousness of the matter due to his connection to the Trump administration's science policies.

In response to reports in The Telegraph, the Royal Society is reported to have called for a meeting of its fellows next month to vote on expelling Musk. A spokesperson for the Royal Society confirmed the upcoming meeting on March 3, stating that it will focus on reviewing the conduct guidelines for fellows, while maintaining confidentiality regarding any specific individuals involved.
