Portugal's defense ministry stated that due to the unpredictability of Trump's policies towards NATO and Europe, they might opt for European jets instead of F-35s to replace their aging F-16 fighter jets.
Defence Minister Nuno Melo expressed concern, noting, "The recent U.S. stance in the context of NATO and the international geostrategic dimension makes us consider the best options, as the predictability of our allies is a significant factor to consider."
Amid Trump's evolving stance towards NATO and increased demands for European members to boost defense spending, Melo highlighted potential limitations imposed by an ally that has historically been predictable. Melo, a member of Portugal's centre-right government in a caretaker position, emphasized the importance of considering various European aircraft models, alongside the possibility of acquiring F-35s.
The defense ministry emphasized the need to strengthen the European pillar of NATO defenses against evolving geopolitical challenges, stressing the importance of enhancing local defense production capabilities. The European Commission urged EU countries to identify defense priorities and initiate pan-European projects to bolster defense capabilities, underscoring the preference for European-made equipment where feasible.
