Pope Francis Initiates New Catholic Reform Process, Reveals Intent to Remain

VATICAN CITY, March 15 - Pope Francis has approved a new three-year process to review potential reforms for the global Catholic Church, the Vatican announced on Saturday. This decision indicates the 88-year-old pontiff's intention to remain in his position despite his ongoing battle with double pneumonia.

Through extending the work of the Synod of Bishops, one of his key initiatives, discussions will continue about reforms such as the prospect of women serving as Catholic deacons and the improved inclusion of LGBTQ individuals in the Church.

Following a bishops' assembly that took place last October to examine the Church's future, the synod will now engage in consultations with Catholics worldwide over the next three years before convening a new summit in 2028.

Approving the new reform process from Rome's Gemelli hospital where he is currently receiving treatment, Pope Francis has demonstrated his commitment to ongoing reform efforts, as stated by the Vatican on Saturday.

Despite speculation about the possibility of his resignation due to his prolonged hospital stay, close associates and biographers assert that the pope is determined to persevere. The recent approval of a three-year reform process signals his dedication to leading the Church's renewal, even in the face of health concerns.

Cardinal Mario Grech, overseeing the reform process, expressed, "The Holy Father is guiding the Church's renewal towards a fresh missionary momentum, which is truly a beacon of hope," as conveyed by the Vatican's media outlet.

Pope Francis, in office since 2013, is recognized for his efforts to modernize the traditional Church, a move that has met with resistance from some within the Catholic community, even among senior cardinals. Despite criticisms, the pope continues to navigate the Church through a period of change, aiming to align its teachings with contemporary society.

The ongoing reform process is deemed a strategic move by Pope Francis to reaffirm his leadership among the global congregation. Speaking on the significance of this decision, Massimo Faggioli, a Villanova University professor and papal expert, emphasized the enduring impact of the upcoming reforms until 2028 on the rest of Francis' papacy.

After the last inconclusive Vatican summit in October and amidst questions regarding the momentum of Pope Francis' papacy, the Vatican had clarified that potential changes were under consideration. The latest reports on the pope's health indicate improvement, yet his discharge date remains undisclosed.

Throughout his recovery, well-wishers have been gathering outside the hospital to show support for Francis. Among them, Stefania Gianni, undergoing cancer treatment at the hospital, praised the pope's efforts to modernize the Church, affirming his importance in its ongoing development.
