Pope Francis disclosed on Wednesday that he was still grappling with bronchitis, requesting an aide to deliver his prepared remarks at the Vatican's weekly general audience for the second time in two weeks. The 88-year-old pontiff, who has been in office since 2013, has encountered various health issues, including flu, over the past couple of years.

Despite his bronchitis, Pope Francis expressed hope that he would soon be able to read aloud himself, stating, "Me, with my bronchitis, I cannot (read) still. I hope that next time I can." Last week, he informed attendees at the audience that he was dealing with a "strong cold," later confirmed by the Vatican to be bronchitis.

While Pope Francis refrained from reading the main part of his weekly message, he remained engaged during the hour-long audience, delivering brief remarks at intervals. He has continued with his daily appointments, holding meetings at his Vatican residence, and even appeared via video at Italy's prestigious Sanremo song festival. Notably, the pontiff recently endured two falls at his Vatican abode, resulting in bruising to his chin and an arm injury.
