According to a recent YouGov poll on Wednesday, the Social Democrats (SPD) led by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz saw a three percentage point increase in support following their endorsement of a contentious migration bill proposed by conservatives and supported by a far-right party.
Despite the conservative CDU/CSU bloc maintaining a steady 29% lead in the poll, the SPD's rise to 18% indicates that voters may view the party as a counterbalance to the CDU/CSU's new approach, as noted by YouGov.
YouGov also highlighted that half of the voters perceive conservative leader Friedrich Merz as having weakened resistance against the far-right.
The survey further revealed a slight dip for the anti-immigrant AfD and the Greens party by one point each, while the radical Left party gained one point.
Notably, the Greens lost three points since January 22, indicating a shift possibly influenced by their more lenient stance on migration, according to YouGov.
Germany has witnessed growing public concern over migration following a series of violent incidents involving immigrants, despite a 34% decrease in asylum requests and illegal entries last year.
