Polish border guards discovered over 100 kg of cocaine at the bottom of the Baltic Sea while carrying out operations to protect critical infrastructure, the border guard announced on Tuesday. Seven individuals were arrested in connection with the drugs, with an estimated black market value of up to 60 million zlotys ($15 million).
Baltic Sea nations are on high alert for incidents involving underwater critical infrastructure, prompting NATO to announce an increased presence in the area following suspicious damage to such infrastructure.
The drugs were located on the seabed in the Gulf of Gdansk in northern Poland. Subsequent investigations revealed additional significant quantities of drugs after authorities determined the whereabouts of the alleged perpetrators. Those arrested could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
