Poland's Sikorski States European Countries Won't Form United Army

In an interview with state TV broadcast late on Saturday, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski stated that European countries will not establish a unified army in response to threats from Russia. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy had earlier called for creating a European army, emphasizing the need for a strong military to garner respect from Washington due to uncertainties about protection from the United States.

Sikorski advised caution about the term "European army," clarifying that unifying national armies will not occur; however, he advocated for enhancing the European Union's defense capabilities. He highlighted the EU's ongoing formation of a reinforced brigade and stressed the importance of having a European EU component in addition to national and NATO components.

Sikorski underlined the significance of EU support for the defense industry to bolster production capacity and the necessity of an EU force deserving of its title. Regarding deploying Polish troops in Ukraine, he emphasized that it was not under consideration, as Poland's NATO obligation is to safeguard its eastern flank, namely its own territory.
