NATO members Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia announced on Tuesday their intention to withdraw from the Ottawa convention, which bans anti-personnel mines, citing the military threat from Russia. This move will enable them to re-establish stockpiling of landmines.

The defense ministers of these countries highlighted the increased military threats emanating from Russia and Belarus, stating, "our countries are prepared and can use every necessary measure to defend our security needs."

Lithuanian Defense Minister Dovile Sakaliene emphasized that the decision to withdraw is aimed at safeguarding the region's borders effectively.

Additionally, it was noted that Finland is also contemplating withdrawal from the international agreement due to Russia's use of such weapons in Ukraine.
