Paraguay's government summoned Brazilian ambassador Jose Antonio Marcondes to address an "intelligence action" against Paraguay related to the Itaipu power plant, as stated on Tuesday.

Negotiations concerning the Itaipu hydroelectric power plant, originally scheduled to conclude by the end of May, have been suspended pending Brazil's clarifications.

Brazil acknowledged on Monday that the operation was authorized by the previous government under President Jair Bolsonaro, following reports from Brazilian news outlet UOL that Brazil's intelligence agency Abin attempted to hack Paraguayan authorities; however, it confirmed that the operation was later canceled.

These actions were reportedly intended to gather information regarding the Itaipu tariff agreement.

Itaipu is a binational hydroelectric power plant shared by Brazil and Paraguay. Brazil's foreign ministry stated that President Lula's administration "categorically denies any involvement in the intelligence action," adding that the operation was terminated as soon as the current government became aware of it in March 2023.
