One person has died after a boat carrying migrants attempting to cross the English Channel from France encountered difficulties overnight, according to a local French authority.
The authority responsible for the North Sea and English Channel regions reported that 15 people were rescued and brought back to shore at the port of Gravelines, near Dunkirk.
Both the British and French governments have prioritized addressing the issue of illegal migration across the English Channel, where individuals often undertake perilous journeys in dinghies or small boats.
Data from January indicated that the UK government has significantly increased its removals of individuals since taking office last July, achieving the highest rate of such actions since 2018. However, the Labour Party's political opponents argue that more needs to be done.
