Nine Real Sociedad fans were injured, with one in critical condition, as a result of clashes with Lazio supporters prior to Thursday's Europa League match, according to Rome police.
Approximately 70 Spanish fans were assaulted by about 80 Lazio supporters near the Colosseum on Wednesday at 11 p.m. (2200 GMT), confirmed a police spokesperson.
Of the nine injured individuals, six were hospitalized and four were released overnight. One of the two remaining in the hospital is in critical condition, although not life-threatening, noted the police.
Lazio released a statement condemning "all forms of violence," expressing willingness to assist authorities and promising severe action if fans' involvement is confirmed through investigations.
Police highlighted that the assailants utilized blunt objects and knives, sharing an image of weapons believed to have been used, such as a hammer, sticks, batons, wrenches, and a chain.
The perpetrators fled the scene upon the police's arrival, as stated by the police spokesperson.
