New York Temporarily Closes Live Poultry Markets Due to Bird Flu Outbreak

All live poultry markets in New York City and neighboring counties have been shut down following the discovery of seven cases of avian flu during inspections, confirmed by New York Governor Kathy Hochul. The closure will remain in effect at least until Feb. 14, with markets required to undergo disinfection and pass state inspections before resuming operations. Governor Hochul assured there is no imminent risk to public health, underlining that the closure serves as a preventative measure. Officials advise people dealing with sick or deceased birds to utilize protective gear, such as respiratory and eye protection along with gloves.
