NASA and the Italian Space Agency have achieved a breakthrough by detecting Earth-based GPS signals from 243,000 miles away in space, setting a new distance record. The Lunar GNSS Receiver Experiment has proven that lunar spacecraft can independently pick up GPS and other navigation signals from Earth. This discovery has the potential to lessen the need for mission control in upcoming lunar landings, as confirmed by the LuGRE experiment team. NASA has successfully implemented GPS navigation on the lunar surface, marking a major milestone.
