Mexico Secures Tariff Reprieve Following President's 'Excellent' Call with Trump

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed gratitude to her U.S. counterpart, Donald Trump, for their productive conversation, emphasizing cooperation on security and migration. Following the call, it was announced that Mexico would be exempt from tariffs under the USMCA trade deal until April 2. Sheinbaum noted that the majority of Mexican imports to the U.S. comply with this agreement.

She emphasized ongoing joint efforts to prevent the flow of opioid fentanyl from Mexico to the U.S. and to address the issue of firearm trafficking from the U.S. to Mexico. The Mexican peso remained stable against the dollar post-announcement. Both countries, as top trade partners, benefit across various industries from their trilateral trade agreement with Canada facilitating cross-border trade.

In related news, the White House granted a one-month tariff extension to car manufacturers complying with the USMCA trade deal. There were indications that more products could be spared from tariffs, with potential updates to be announced soon. Sheinbaum mentioned that a rally planned to respond to U.S. tariffs in Mexico City’s Zocalo square would now be transformed into a "festival."
