Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has called on Google to reconsider its decision to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the "Gulf of America" for U.S. users. She expressed that Mexico could take legal action against the company if deemed necessary. The modification in Google Maps was made to align with a decision by U.S. President Donald Trump.
Sheinbaum has criticized the renaming, emphasizing the longstanding international recognition of the name "Gulf of Mexico." She highlighted Google's failure to address Mexico's previous objections and urged a reassessment in light of the U.S. White House decree, stating its jurisdiction extending only up to 22 nautical miles from the coast.
While the name remains unchanged to "Gulf of Mexico" for Mexican Google Maps users, both names appear for users in other countries. Sheinbaum outlined the possibility of Mexico pursuing legal action if Google maintains its position, indicating readiness to initiate a civil suit. Mexico's legal team is evaluating potential implications, with hopes that Google will reconsider the decision.
