Mexico City Revamps Bullfighting Practices, Celebrating Victory for Animal Activists

On Tuesday, Mexico City's local congress passed a measure aimed at reducing harm to bulls and matadors during bullfights, a move hailed by animal rights activists but strongly criticized by fans of the centuries-old tradition. The measure prohibits the use of spades and swords by bullfighters and mandates that bulls have their horns covered to prevent harm to humans.

Mayor Clara Brugada of the Morena party introduced the bill, which was approved with 61 votes in favor and one against. Demonstrations outside the congress saw clashes between dozens of bullfighting enthusiasts and the police, with some attempting to break past barriers. Others expressed their respect for bulls through signs.

Lawmaker Victor Hugo Romo de Vivar stated, "The aim is not to make bullfighting disappear, but to evolve." Mayor Brugada emphasized the city's commitment to animal rights and preventing abuse or violence.

The bill will come into effect in 210 days, allowing time for the government to establish new regulations for bullfighting. Mexico City is home to the world's largest bullring, with a tradition dating back to 1529. In 2027, several Latin American countries plan to phase out bullfighting, following the trend of recent bans in the region.
