Mexico Awaits Google's New Response on Gulf of Mexico Name Dispute Before Filing Lawsuit

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that Mexico will take legal action against Google if it persists in referring to the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America on its Maps service for U.S. users. She emphasized that renaming the gulf violates Mexico's sovereignty as it controls 49% of it, while arguing that the U.S. only has jurisdiction over about 46%.

In response to a letter from Google, Sheinbaum reaffirmed Mexico's stance on the matter, stating that the country will not accept the renaming and will pursue legal action if necessary. She also noted that high-level meetings with the U.S. on trade and security are scheduled for this week in light of escalating tensions surrounding this issue.
