Mexican Official Considers Further Actions Against Low-Cost Shipments

Mexico is considering additional trade measures to combat low-cost imports, particularly from China. Deputy Economy Minister Vidal Llerenas explained during a panel at the FinTech Mexico Festival that the focus is on curbing contraband. The country has already imposed tariffs on "de minimis" purchases and is evaluating further actions.

This crackdown on cheap goods, many originating from China, aims to address issues like counterfeit products that previously entered Mexico under low-cost exemptions. The move is seen as an effort to reduce shipments from e-commerce platforms like Shein and Temu, some of which transit through Mexico en route to the U.S.

Acknowledging U.S. concerns, Llerenas pointed out that prior imports of low-cost goods appeared to exploit the system to evade taxes. He mentioned pressure from both the Trump and Biden administrations and emphasized the importance of regulating e-commerce to benefit consumers while preventing the influx of untaxed merchandise.
