Massive Anti-Government Rally Floods Belgrade

In Belgrade on Saturday, over 100,000 protesters gathered, marking one of the largest demonstrations in decades. The protest, comprising students, workers, and various groups, confronted riot police and supporters of President Aleksandar Vucic. At the heart of the unrest are accusations of corruption and negligence following a tragic incident at a railway station that resulted in 15 deaths.

The diverse crowd, including students, teachers, and farmers, poses a significant challenge to Vucic, a long-standing populist leader. Amidst peaceful demonstrations, isolated incidents of violence, such as a vehicular attack on protesters and assaults on individuals, have occurred.

Despite government denials of misconduct, the protesters advocate for increased accountability, transparency, and a departure from the alleged oppressive governance. Their demands include the release of documents related to the railway disaster and justice for the victims. The demonstrators, carrying out their advocacy with a spirited demeanor, have called for a heightened general strike in the days ahead.
