Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim stated that Malaysia will proactively engage in building trade relations with countries like China, Russia, and Brazil rather than passively reacting to potential U.S. trade tariffs. He emphasized in parliament that waiting for U.S. tariffs could harm Malaysia, citing uncertainties post U.S. President Donald Trump's actions concerning Canada and Mexico. Anwar pointed out that despite the impending U.S. tariffs on China, Malaysia needs to navigate carefully due to existing geopolitical uncertainties. He stressed the importance of taking proactive measures to expand the network of trading partners.
