French President Emmanuel Macron referred to the knife attack in eastern France on Saturday as "Islamist terrorism" after France's anti-terrorism prosecutor's office confirmed its investigation.

According to a statement from the PNAT prosecutor's office, a man attacked local police officers in Mulhouse shouting "Allahu Akbar" ("God is greatest") on Saturday afternoon.

Tragically, a passerby was killed trying to intervene, and three police officers were injured. Macron stated to reporters at the French farm show that "without any doubt it is an act of Islamist terrorism" and mentioned that the interior minister was en route to Mulhouse.

The suspect has been apprehended, as confirmed by the prosecutor's office.
