An international design competition will be held to create a second entrance for the Louvre Museum in Paris, aiming to alleviate the increasing visitor numbers congesting the famous glass Pyramid. President Emmanuel Macron made this announcement during his address to dignitaries in front of the Mona Lisa, outlining his New Renaissance project for the world's busiest museum. By 2031, besides the new entrance, there will be a separate admission fee to visit a new display space for the Mona Lisa. Starting next January, non-EU visitors will face adjusted entrance fees. Responding to warnings from the Louvre's director Laurence des Cars about overcrowding and deteriorating facilities, Macron unveiled plans to revamp the eastern facade and enhance underground exhibition spaces. The President's vision also includes creating a green zone on the esplanade and integrating the museum into the city, aiming to "give it back to the Parisians". The overhaul will improve visitor experience, especially regarding the Mona Lisa, which will be relocated to enable better viewing and appreciation alongside other masterpieces. Additional renovations, including modernizing infrastructure and enhancing visitor amenities, will be financed through ticket sales, donations, and the Louvre Abu Dhabi's sponsorship. By embarking on this ambitious project, Macron seeks to leave a lasting cultural legacy despite facing diminished political influence since losing control of the French parliament.
