In Rome on January 23, ASI, the head of Italy's national space agency, reassured that a potential collaboration between Italy and Elon Musk's Starlink for secure satellite communication would not compromise security. The aim is to establish encrypted communication channels for government entities and defense personnel in high-risk regions.
ASI President Teodoro Valente stated that an agreement with Starlink could provide secure communications utilizing national technology. He emphasized that concerns about data security lacked a solid technical basis.
Valente mentioned that choosing Starlink would not clash with the European IRIS2 project, which aims to offer secure communication services and broadband access. As IRIS2 is not expected to be operational before 2031, Italy is now exploring alternative options due to protracted negotiations.
Valente revealed that ASI is finalizing a feasibility study for a national low-orbit satellite constellation, emphasizing it would complement, not compete with, the European initiative. Despite Italy's significant role in the space industry, Valente noted that any solution would entail a lengthy process.
He highlighted, "We do not have low-orbit satellites ready for deployment."
