The Italian government rejected accusations of unlawfully monitoring journalists and migrant activists through Paragon spyware, asserting adherence to privacy regulations and the usage of intelligence-gathering technology in accordance with contractual agreements. Reports indicate that at least seven Italian cellphones were compromised with Paragon spyware, leading to an inquiry by the National Cybersecurity Agency at the government's behest. Luca Casarini and Francesco Cancellato, who have been critical of the government, acknowledged their phones were infected with spyware and received WhatsApp notifications. Cabinet Minister Luca Ciriani emphasized that despite the government's association with Paragon Solutions, privacy laws were upheld, dismissing any claims of unauthorized surveillance on journalists.
