Newly released satellite images reveal ongoing construction by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) within the demilitarized buffer zone separating the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights from Syria.

The exclusive images obtained by BBC Verify depict construction activities located more than 600 meters inside the Area of Separation (AoS).

In accordance with the 1974 ceasefire agreement between Israel and Syria, the IDF is prohibited from crossing the designated Alpha Line on the western edge of the AoS.

In response to inquiries regarding the images, the IDF informed the BBC that its "forces are operating in southern Syria, within the buffer zone and at strategic points, to protect the residents of northern Israel."

The imagery captured on January 21st displays new structures and trucks in the cleared area, indicating construction initiated at the beginning of the year, as observed in lower-resolution images showing gradual development since January 1st.

Additionally, a new track or road approximately 1 kilometer in length now connects with an existing road leading into Israeli territory.

Drone photos shared by a Syrian journalist on January 20th show trucks, excavators, and bulldozers present at the site.

Middle East specialist at the defense intelligence company Janes, Jeremy Binnie, commented, "The photo reveals what seem to be four prefabricated guard posts that will likely be placed in the corners, suggesting a planned interim presence at the location."
