Instagram is contemplating launching a standalone app for its short-form video feature, Reels, as confirmed by the company's CEO, Adam Mosseri, according to a report from the Information. The move aims to leverage TikTok's uncertain situation in the United States by offering a comparable video-scrolling experience.
Upon reaching out for comments, Meta, the parent company of Instagram, did not immediately respond to Reuters.
Earlier in January, Meta announced the introduction of a new video-editing app called Edits, seemingly positioning itself to compete with CapCut, a similar video-editing app owned by TikTok's parent company, ByteDance.
In 2018, Meta experimented with a separate video-sharing app named Lasso to rival TikTok, but failing to attract significant attention, the app was eventually discontinued by the company.
