Members of Indonesia's parliament intend to propose the removal of the central bank governor, citing perceived lack of support for government policies, as reported by investigative magazine Tempo. The parliament recently passed regulations overseeing the assessment and removal of public officials appointed by the legislature.
Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, deputy speaker of parliament and a prominent figure in President Prabowo Subianto's party, denied any plans to remove the central bank governor, Perry Warjiyo. However, Tempo's sources mentioned that some coalition members might urge the president to dismiss Warjiyo for allegedly not collaborating on economic matters, without specifying a particular policy.
Warjiyo, who has been the Bank Indonesia Governor since 2018, did not comment immediately. The president's spokesperson stated that they were unaware of any removal plan. Other lawmakers from the ruling coalition did not respond to requests for comments.
It is noted that Prabowo holds a strong majority in parliament, where Warjiyo's term, initially appointed in 2018 and extended in 2023 until 2028, had been approved without objection during Joko Widodo's presidency.
