NEW DELHI, Feb 7 (Reuters) - Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit the United States from February 12 to 13 for talks with President Donald Trump, announced Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri on Friday.

This visit follows shortly after Modi's return to the White House for his second term and amid the recent deportation of 104 Indian immigrants by Washington, in line with Trump's immigration policies.

Prior to his visit to Washington, Modi will visit France from February 10 to 12, as confirmed by Misri.

During discussions on January 27, Trump emphasized the need for India to boost purchases of American-made security equipment and foster fair bilateral trade relations.

Misri informed reporters that both leaders are looking forward to a forthcoming meeting, stating that Modi's visit will "further guide and energize this crucial partnership."

India, a key ally of the U.S. against China, is focused on strengthening trade ties and facilitating skilled worker visas for its citizens. It aims to reduce tariffs on various items, including luxury cars, solar cells, and chemicals, to potentially increase imports from the U.S. amidst rising global trade tensions.

In 2023/24, the two-way trade between India and the United States exceeded $118 billion, resulting in India holding a trade surplus of $32 billion.
