A man in India has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the rape and murder of a junior doctor, a case that triggered nationwide outrage and protests.

The convicted, Roy, claims innocence and plans to challenge the ruling in a higher court.

The victim's family expressed a desire for capital punishment, expressing being "shocked" by the sentence.

"We are determined to keep fighting for justice, no matter what obstacles we face," the victim's father conveyed to AFP news agency.

Indian law protects the anonymity of sexual violence victims and their relatives.

The murder of the trainee doctor at the Kolkata hospital where she worked last August sent shockwaves throughout the country.

Following a night shift, the 31-year-old doctor had fallen asleep in the seminar hall at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Her severely injured body, partially unclothed, was later found near a podium by a colleague.

The incident sparked nationwide demonstrations and raised concerns about the safety of healthcare workers in India, particularly women.

According to the chargesheet from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) reviewed by the BBC, Roy, in an inebriated state, went to the hospital and came upon the female doctor alone.

An autopsy revealed that the victim had been strangled and bore marks indicating a struggle.

Roy, taken into custody the day after the incident, has consistently refuted the accusations.

In Kolkata, doctors staged a prolonged strike demanding action against the perpetrator and officials they alleged hindered the investigation.
