IBM Victorious in UK Lawsuit Against LzLabs for Alleged Mainframe Technology Theft

IBM successfully won a lawsuit in London on Monday against U.S. tech entrepreneur and philanthropist John Moores' company, LzLabs, for stealing trade secrets. IBM accused Switzerland-based LzLabs, two English subsidiaries, and their owner, John Moores, of unlawfully accessing and reverse-engineering IBM's mainframe software through a licensing agreement made in 2013. Despite LzLabs and Moores' defense that they independently developed their software legally, the High Court predominantly ruled in favor of IBM. The judgment stated that LzLabs breached the terms of their software license from IBM and that they "unlawfully procured (those) breaches."

The ruling was made after a trial last year to establish the liability of the defendants to IBM. A hearing to determine potential damages will follow. IBM's claims against another British subsidiary of LzLabs and its current and former CEO were dismissed. Both IBM and LzLabs have yet to comment on the outcome of the case. John Moores was not available for immediate comment.
