The cyberattack on UnitedHealth's Change Healthcare unit has resulted in the compromise of personal data belonging to 190 million Americans, making it the largest healthcare breach in US history. The attack, which occurred in February 2024, disrupted medical payment systems nationwide and exposed confidential medical records.
As a result of the breach, sensitive health information, Social Security numbers, and financial data were exposed, heightening the risk of identity theft. UnitedHealth is providing free credit monitoring services in response, and there are discussions about introducing new cybersecurity regulations to mitigate the likelihood of similar incidents in the future.
