The United States will not acquire Greenland, Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen stated in a Facebook post on Sunday, responding to Donald Trump's suggestion of US control over the vast Arctic territory.
"President Trump says that the United States is getting Greenland. Let me be clear: The United States won't get that. We do not belong to anyone else. We determine our own future," Nielsen emphasized in his statement.
Trump had previously remarked to NBC News that he had "absolutely" discussed the possibility of annexing the semi-autonomous Danish territory, asserting, "We'll get Greenland. Yeah, 100%."
During a visit to a U.S. military base in northern Greenland on Friday, U.S. Vice President JD Vance criticized Denmark for not adequately securing the island and indicated that the United States could provide better protection for this strategically important location.
