Greenland Democrats Seek Broad Coalition for Unity Amid Trump Pressure

In response to winning this week's elections, the Democrats in Greenland called for the country's political parties to set aside their differences and quickly establish a broad coalition government to demonstrate unity in the midst of U.S. pressure on the island.

Jens-Frederik Nielsen, the leader of the pro-business party advocating for a gradual independence from Denmark, emphasized the urgency of the situation in a Facebook post after initial coalition discussions, stressing the need to prioritize the country's well-being over political strategies.

The five party leaders of Greenland's Inatsisartut parliament rejected President Trump's statements about Greenland's annexation, describing the comments as unacceptable and detrimental to the relationships within the defense alliance.

Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen of Denmark confirmed the Danish government's full support for Greenland's party leaders, reiterating that Greenland is an integral part of the Kingdom of Denmark and emphasizing the importance of respecting territorial integrity.

The Democrats, who significantly increased their seats in the parliament, advocate for the responsible extraction of Greenland's mineral resources to drive economic growth as the territory moves towards full independence. The Naleraq party, which strongly supports independence, also made significant gains in the recent election.
