Environment Secretary Steve Reed has committed to preventing the entry of anything but rainwater into Windermere as part of a cleansing campaign. The lake has been grappling with pollution problems stemming from sewage discharges, leading local groups to carry out a feasibility study aimed at addressing these challenges. United Utilities is set to allocate £200 million to enhance wastewater treatment facilities, with the goal of limiting sewage overflows to 10 per year by 2030. Reed remarked that Windermere is currently "being choked by unacceptable levels of sewage pollution," underscoring the government's dedication to revitalizing its pristine environment.
