Georgia to Acquire Israeli Data Extraction Technology Amid Crackdown on Street Protests

Georgia has renewed contracts with Israeli technology firm Cellebrite DI Ltd for software that aids in extracting data from mobile devices, according to recent procurement documents. These renewals and new purchases, totaling $2.4 million, were disclosed on Tuesday by Georgia's state procurement agency.

The software, named Inseyets, assists law enforcement in retrieving crucial information from various devices. Cellebrite's tools are utilized globally, even by organizations such as the FBI, for unlocking smartphones and conducting forensic examinations.

An online invoice from February 17 reveals that Georgia's interior ministry intends to acquire six new licenses for Inseyets over a three-year period, along with additional software to streamline data collection procedures.

While the Georgian interior ministry has yet to comment, Cellebrite emphasized its commitment to ethical and lawful use of their technology worldwide, aligning with their values of accelerating justice and protecting communities.

The decision to continue business with Cellebrite comes amidst political unrest in Georgia following disputed parliamentary elections, triggering ongoing protests and allegations of government suppression. Meanwhile, recent reports have exposed concerns over Cellebrite's sales to Georgia, prompting the company to advise expedited purchases to avoid potential restrictions.

In response to misuse allegations in Serbia, Cellebrite announced on Tuesday the suspension of sales to the country, distancing itself from any involvement in surveillance activities and reaffirming its focus on supporting lawful investigations.
