Gaza's Rafah Crossing Reopens for Medical Evacuations After Nine Months

Event: Yesterday, fifty sick and injured Palestinian children crossed the Rafah border in Gaza into Egypt, marking the first human movement since May 2024. The reopening of the crossing came after a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, with supervision from European Union monitors.

Significance: More than 12,000 Palestinians in Gaza are in urgent need of medical treatment outside the region, with 6,000 prepared for immediate evacuation. The World Health Organization reports that half of these patients are children with injuries from war trauma, while others have chronic conditions necessitating specialized care not accessible in Gaza.
