On February 6, France and the United Arab Emirates reached an agreement for a 1 gigawatt data center focused on artificial intelligence, with expected investments ranging from $30 to $50 billion, according to the French presidency.

President Emmanuel Macron welcomed Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed al-Nahyan on Thursday in preparation for an upcoming AI summit in Paris, where about 100 countries will convene to explore AI's potential.

The summit on February 10-11 also seeks to position France and Europe in the AI landscape to compete with front-runners like the U.S. and China in this energy-intensive technology sector.

A joint statement by the two leaders highlighted their intention to forge a strategic AI partnership, with a commitment to pursuing collaborations on projects and investments that support the AI value chain development.

The investments are set to encompass both French and Emirati AI, cutting-edge chip acquisitions, data center establishment, talent development, and the creation of virtual data embassies to facilitate the establishment of sovereign AI and cloud infrastructures in both countries.

Details on the initial investments will be disclosed at the Choose France summit later this year. The French government earlier identified 35 potential sites for hosting AI data centers.
