First Firing Squad Execution in the U.S. Since 2010: South Carolina's Preparation

Brad Sigmon, aged 67, is set to be executed by firing squad on March 7 at Broad River Correctional Institution in South Carolina. Opting for this method over lethal injection and the electric chair, he will become the first US inmate to face a firing squad execution in 15 years.

This execution holds significance as it may establish new standards for future capital punishment procedures in the US. South Carolina permitted firing squads in 2021 in response to scarce lethal injection drugs. The method involves three volunteers shooting from a distance of 15 feet at a target placed over the inmate's heart.
