OpenAI is advancing its plan to reduce dependency on Nvidia by developing its own artificial intelligence silicon. The organization is finalizing the design for its first in-house chip, set to be fabricated by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Known as "taping out," this design phase involves significant costs and may take about six months for a finished chip to be produced.

The move aligns with OpenAI's goal to commence mass production at TSMC in 2026. The in-house chip project is viewed internally as a strategic tool to enhance the organization's bargaining power with chip suppliers. Following the initial chip release, OpenAI aims to create more sophisticated processors in subsequent iterations.

The success of the first chip design will determine OpenAI's ability to enter mass production and potentially explore alternatives to Nvidia's chips later in the year. The initiative, led by OpenAI's in-house team under Richard Ho, signifies a significant leap in progress for the organization.
