EU's Kallas Warns Against Surrendering to Russian Aggression in Ukraine Talks

European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas expressed concerns on Thursday in Johannesburg regarding the interactions between the United States and Russia, emphasizing that Moscow has not abandoned its territorial ambitions in Ukraine. Kallas cautioned against appeasing Russia, stating that doing so would send a dangerous signal.

Discussing recent developments, Kallas highlighted that Russia has not renounced its objectives and aims to gain even more ground. She underscored the risk of empowering aggressors if their demands are met without resistance.

Kallas critiqued certain countries for prioritizing mediation over applying political and economic pressure on Russia to cease the conflict. She noted the danger of offering concessions to an aggressor, which could encourage similar behavior globally.

Additionally, Kallas pointed out that Russia's lack of interest in peace should not be overlooked. She deemed premature any discussions about deploying peacekeeping troops in Ukraine, especially without a ceasefire in place.

Earlier that day, British Foreign Minister David Lammy voiced his disappointment over the lack of progress in discussions with Russia concerning peace initiatives for Ukraine at the meetings held in Johannesburg.
