European Leaders Advise Against Ceasefire in Ukraine Without Peace Agreement

A group of European leaders gathered in Paris on Monday to discuss providing security guarantees to Ukraine. According to a European Union official, they emphasized the importance of not declaring a ceasefire without a solid peace agreement in place simultaneously.

The official stated, "We are ready to provide security guarantees, with specific arrangements tailored to each party, contingent upon the level of American support," summarizing the outcomes of the meeting.

The initiative for the meeting came from French President Emmanuel Macron, following bilateral peace negotiations between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russia, which excluded European allies and Ukraine. These talks are scheduled to start in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday.

Attending the meeting were Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, as well as Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and European Council President Antonio Costa.

The EU official representing the group expressed support for President Trump's "peace through strength" strategy but emphasized the necessity of coupling any ceasefire with a comprehensive peace agreement.
