Europe Refuses to Turn Uncle Sam into 'Uncle Sucker,' States US Defense Secretary

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, at a press conference in Brussels, defended Washington's negotiating strategy with Russia regarding the conflict in Ukraine and cautioned Europe against relying solely on the U.S. for defense. He emphasized that Europe should take primary responsibility for its defense.

During his first international appearance since assuming office on Jan. 24, Hegseth sparked controversy by stating that reverting to Ukraine's pre-2014 borders was impractical and that NATO membership for Kyiv was not seen as a solution to the conflict. Despite criticism, Hegseth stood by his remarks, acknowledging the realities on the ground and hinting at potential concessions in negotiations.

Hegseth mentioned the possibility of discussing future funding and troop levels during talks but stressed that no decisions would be made without President Trump's approval. Trump had initiated discussions with Putin and Zelenskiy, prompting concerns from Ukraine and European NATO allies that they might be excluded from any agreements.

While European officials expressed reservations about potential deals without their involvement, Hegseth reaffirmed the importance of strengthening European defense capabilities within NATO. He emphasized the need for all partners to contribute more to ensure the alliance's future success, reiterating the importance of revitalizing NATO for the years ahead.
